Very Large Lithium-ion Batteries | Batteries content from Power Electronics

20 MWh batteries on the horizon, 350KWh batteries in commercial use.  These are currently being or will need to be shipped.  Of course the Very Large batteries are being considered for use in power grids and will most likely ship via ground to start, I am certain that at some point, these will need to move by air.  The regulations will need to catch up to this technology very quickly.  I doubt that batteries of this size were considered when the regs for UN3480 were written.

Hoverboard Explosion Damages Highland Park Home | Patch

So it seems that the Hoverboard dilemma has reached my home town of Chicago.  Local news reports that the batteries of a Hoverboard bought for children combusted and cause damage to a north suburban home near Chicago.

The article doesnt have much more info, however, security camera footage in the affluent North Suburban home shows some of the fire's intensity.

There Is Only One Reason Vapes, Hoverboards and Drones All Keep Exploding

"The companies manufacturing electronic cigarettes, drones and hoverboards aren't technological giants — they're infantile shops dealing with a sudden influx of demand. They're looking to make their gadgets cheaply and quickly, and without the R&D, investment capital or decades of institutional experience, they're working with whatever they can get their hands on."

Finally, a lithium battery that doesn't explode

Good article.  From what I understand, batteries
require extended exposure to 150+ degrees to achieve thermal runaway, typically
20 to 40 minutes depending on the battery.
Good stuff here.  It adds a second
level of protection on top of the device protections (if the device has it).
